Around the Room

Three Bears...
Easel Drawing (Did you know? Writing on a vertical surface makes it easier for the child to coordinate eyes and hand movement because the hands are right in front of the eyes. Writing on a large surface such as a chalk board makes it easier for a child to use large arm movements. Large arm movements help a child learn to form shapes, letters and numbers. It is easier to interpret position concepts such as top and bottom when using a vertical surface because these will be on the same plane as the child's body unlike when the student is seated at a table.  Vertical surfaces strengthen shoulders, arms and hands since a child will need to work extra hard to reach forward, to press, for example- chalk against the board. Working in the vertical plane promotes a good extended wrist position that helps a child to stabilize his hand while writing and to open up his fingers to manipulate small objects that he attaches to a board. http://www.brighthub.com/)

Blocks!

Watching Squeak...

Washing dishes...

We are strengthening our hand muscles by squeezing balls out of socks...occupational therapists come up with the most unique ideas - I just copy them!

Spraying our papers with water makes the chalk look different!  Is it art or science?  Why choose just one?

Sand table with measuring cups and funnels...

Rings on our Fingers

We are playing with rings this week...and when not learning to share and solve conflicts, we are learning to count, sort, pattern and even add and subtract!

I tried to get everyone but know I missed some of you!  Thanks for coming - I think it was a fun night!

Rules

Have you noticed our rules?  These specific rules come from a problem I bring up at group time and we discuss as a class.  The children talk about why something (like playdough on the ground) can be a problem (it gets in shoes and on the carpet) and then we come up with a solution (playdough stays on the table).  This way when someone decides to take playdough to the play kitchen to "cook" it, I can remind them of the rule we made and they understand why.

Mirrors

Need a mirror or window cleaned?  Squeezing that spray bottle is great for hand muscles and a lot of fun!

Love it!

PVC and Funnel Fun

We had a lot of fun learning about the job funnels do and experimenting with connecting pvc.  If you look closly, you'll see two examples of how your child may have ended up with sand in their hair and down their shirt...thanks for supporting our learning by dressing your children to play hard!
